How Cotton Swabs (Q-tips) Actually Damage Your Ears Rather than Cleaning

Lunes, Hunyo 8, 2015

Most people remove excess earwax and debris from their ears using cotton swabs or also known as the Q-tips. However, there are a lot of problems reported from the use of it.

For one, the ears shouldn’t really be cleaned everyday as the wax actually have a special purpose which is to keep the ear canal clean. It protects unwanted objects and dust to from reaching all the way to the eardrums. The human ears are actually self-cleaning, using the wax’ anti-bacterial and lubricating feature to keep the area clean. Once the wax dries up, it naturally falls out whenever there is motion applied in the jaw such as chewing food.

Once a person over-cleans the ears only few cerumen (earwax) will be left, and dirt would be able to access the ears which can affect one’s hearing. Also, instead of getting the dirt out Q-tips actually push them back inside the ears.

The earwax trapped there may acquire fungus, bacteria and other viruses which can lead to pain, infection and even a ruptured eardrum. Not counting the incidents where foreign
objects such as hair pins, tweezers and paper clips, were used to clean the ears.

Averagely, about 12 million Americans were reported to be treated for impacted excessive cerumen by ear specialist while having an average of 8 million worth of earwax removal procedures by professionals yearly.

The excessive rubbing of Q-tip in the ears also increase the release of histamine, which in return make the skin irritated and inflamed.

Ear specialist recommend that the best alternative to using Q-tips is to take a few drops in the ear of a mixture of white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and water at body temperature. This will irrigate the excess wax and alleviate irritation and itchiness.
